May 2 2024: On Thursday, Japan’s stock market closed lower, with the Nikkei 225 index declining by 0.10% due to losses in the Marine Transport, Glass, and Steel sectors.
At the end of trading in Tokyo, Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503) emerged as one of the top performers, rising by 4.98% or 119.00 points to reach 2,510.00. Meanwhile, Sumitomo Corp. (TYO:8053) saw a gain of 4.37% or 180.00 points, closing at 4,300.00, and J.Front Retailing Co., Ltd. (TYO:3086) rose by 3.68% or 50.50 points, ending at 1,422.50 in late trade.
On the downside, Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506) experienced a decline of 6.75% or 27.00 points, closing at 373.00, while CyberAgent Inc (TYO:4751) fell by 4.09% or 40.20 points, ending at 942.20, and Mazda Motor Corp (TYO:7261) dropped by 3.24% or 58.00 points, closing at 1,730.00.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange saw more falling stocks than advancing ones, with 1929 falling, 1626 advancing, and 298 remaining unchanged.
Shares in Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503) reached 5-year highs, rising by 4.98% or 119.00 points to 2,510.00. Similarly, shares in Sumitomo Corp. (TYO:8053) hit all-time highs, gaining 4.37% or 180.00 points to 4,300.00.
The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, increased by 0.93% to 20.66.
In commodities trading, crude oil for June delivery rose by 0.67% or 0.53 to $79.53 a barrel. Brent oil for delivery in July also saw an increase of 0.71% or 0.59, reaching $84.03 a barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract rose by 0.64% or 14.90, trading at $2,325.90 a troy ounce.
The USD/JPY pair was up by 0.56% to 155.34, and the EUR/JPY pair rose by 0.62% to 166.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures showed a decrease of 0.11%, reaching 105.51.
