Apr 15 2024: On Monday, Japan’s stock market experienced losses, with the Nikkei 225 index declining by 0.90%. The decline was led by sectors such as Paper & Pulp, Retail, and Chemical, Petroleum & Plastic.
Among the top performers on the Nikkei 225 were Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9501), which rose by 5.83%, Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503) with a gain of 4.25%, and Mitsubishi Materials Corp. (TYO:5711) up by 4.12% in late trade.
On the downside, Astellas Pharma Inc. (TYO:4503) fell by 7.96%, Takashimaya Co., Ltd. (TYO:8233) declined by 6.66%, and Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506) was down by 3.69%.
Overall, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 2252 declining, 1406 advancing, and 221 unchanged.
Specifically, Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9501) reached 5-year highs, while Astellas Pharma Inc. (TYO:4503) hit 3-year lows. Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503) also rose to 5-year highs, along with Mitsubishi Materials Corp. (TYO:5711).
In commodities trading, crude oil for May delivery and Brent oil for June delivery experienced declines, while June Gold Futures rose slightly.
The currency market saw USD/JPY up by 0.35% to 153.82 and EUR/JPY rising by 0.75% to 163.99. The US Dollar Index Futures, however, was down by 0.14% at 105.68.
