Oct 23 2024: Japanese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with declines led by the Shipbuilding, Power, and Banking sectors.
The Nikkei 225 index fell by 0.85% by the close in Tokyo.
Top gainers of the session included Konica Minolta, Inc. (TYO:4902), which surged 11.22% (53.80 points) to 533.30. Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd. (TYO:8804) followed with a 6.10% increase (141.50 points) to 2,463.00, while Kirin Holdings Co., Ltd. (TYO:2503) advanced 3.32% (73.00 points) to 2,273.00.
On the downside, Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. (TYO:6098) saw the biggest drop, falling 4.93% (476.00 points) to 9,170.00. Mercari Inc. (TYO:4385) slipped 4.87% (111.00 points) to 2,166.00, and TOTO Ltd. (TYO:5332) decreased by 4.16% (205.00 points) to 4,718.00.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2805 to 805, with 246 shares unchanged.
The Nikkei Volatility Index, which gauges the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, edged down 0.72% to 26.24.
In commodities, December crude oil futures declined by 0.52% (0.37) to $71.37 per barrel, while Brent oil for December delivery was down 0.50% (0.38) to $75.66 a barrel. December Gold Futures edged up 0.17% (4.65) to $2,764.45 per troy ounce.
In currency markets, USD/JPY rose 0.75% to 152.19, and EUR/JPY was up 0.77% to 164.31.
Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index Futures increased by 0.14% to 104.06.
