May 15 2024: Indian stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with losses in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, Auto, and Banking sectors dragging shares down.
The Nifty 50 index fell by 0.08% at the close on the NSE, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined by 0.16%.
Top Performers on the Nifty 50:
- Coal India Ltd (NS:COAL) rose 4.13% or 18.55 points, closing at 467.25.
- Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) gained 3.55% or 48.15 points, ending at 1,405.50.
- Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL) increased by 3.52% or 21.30 points, finishing at 627.25.
Worst Performers on the Nifty 50:
- Tata Motors Ltd (NS:TAMO) fell 1.94% or 18.70 points, closing at 945.95.
- Bajaj Auto Ltd (NS:BAJA) dropped 1.91% or 173.25 points, ending at 8,892.00.
- Asian Paints Ltd. (NS:ASPN) decreased by 1.85% or 53.15 points, finishing at 2,813.00.
Top Performers on the BSE Sensex 30:
- Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) rose 2.38%, closing at 1,316.00.
- Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) increased by 1.62%, settling at 314.20.
- NTPC Ltd (BO:NTPC) gained 1.59%, closing at 361.50.
Worst Performers on the BSE Sensex 30:
- Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) fell 1.77%, ending at 2,815.00.
- HDFC Bank Ltd (BO:HDBK) dropped 1.41%, settling at 1,441.25.
- Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) decreased by 1.10%, finishing at 1,528.20.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1,300 to 875, with 63 ending unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2,126 rose and 1,515 declined, while 139 ended unchanged. Shares in Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) reached all-time highs, rising 1.62% or 5.00 points to 314.20.
The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, increased by 0.38% to 20.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery were up 0.66% or 15.65, reaching $2,375.55 a troy ounce. Crude oil for June delivery rose 0.08% or 0.06, hitting $78.08 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract increased by 0.05% or 0.04, trading at $82.42 a barrel.
USD/INR edged up 0.01% to 83.51, while EUR/INR rose 0.08% to 90.41.
The US Dollar Index Futures decreased by 0.15% to 104.74.
