Apr 29 2024: Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has entered into a partnership with Baidu Inc (NASDAQ:BIDU) to implement advanced full self-driving (FSD) features in China, leveraging the internet giant’s mapping and navigation capabilities, as reported by Bloomberg on Monday.
The collaboration involves Tesla, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, deploying its FSD services, a focal point highlighted by CEO Elon Musk, utilizing Baidu’s lane-level navigation and mapping solutions.
This development follows Baidu’s announcement just a week ago regarding the integration of Baidu maps into Tesla vehicles starting next month. Elon Musk’s recent visit to China also coincided with this partnership.
By teaming up with Baidu, Tesla overcomes a significant regulatory hurdle, gaining access to data collection on China’s public roads, thereby paving the way for potential deployment of its FSD technology in the country.
Elon Musk has recently emphasized a stronger focus on FSD initiatives, especially as Tesla navigates challenges related to demand and heightened competition in the vehicle sales market. Musk even hinted at the unveiling of Tesla’s first robotaxi, a fully autonomous vehicle, scheduled for August this year.
For Baidu, the collaboration with Tesla signifies increased software utilization and data collection, further strengthening its position in the technology and electric vehicle sectors. Baidu already has partnerships in the EV space with companies like Xiaomi Corp (OTC:XIACF) and Huawei, with reports suggesting ongoing EV development with the latter.
